Corrective Jaw Surgery

Do you have chronic pain in your jaw? Do you have difficulty chewing, biting, or swallowing? Have you noticed that your chin sticks out or is receding?

Also known as orthognathic surgery, jaw surgery is a surgical procedure that is used to correct misalignments in a patient’s jaws and/or teeth. Often used in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to align the teeth, jaw surgery can improve speech, appearance, chewing, and overall comfort throughout your life.

When Is Orthognathic Surgery Needed?

Jaws can become misaligned for a range of reasons, from facial trauma to natural growth. Since jaws grow gradually and sometimes at different rates, the upper and lower jaw can sometimes become misaligned, contributing to problems chewing, speaking, and relaxing. The jaw can also be thrown out of alignment due to facial trauma, such as a major fall or an impact while playing sports.

What to Expect from a Jaw Surgery Consultation

When you come to Oral Surgery on Merivale in Ottawa, ON, for a consultation on jaw surgery, our team will perform a thorough examination and answer any and all questions you may have about the procedure. Most patients see us for corrective jaw surgery based on a recommendation from their orthodontist, dentist, or doctor following a sleep study assessment.

During a consultation, we will first perform a complete examination that includes developing models and digital imaging of your jaw structure. We’ll work to understand how your jaw is positioned and what type of correction would be necessary for improved function and treatment of symptoms. From there, we’ll discuss the procedure with you and cover all of your options. You will get to ask any questions you may have and make decisions on what type of treatment you want to pursue. If you decide to move forward with surgery, we will then set up a surgery schedule.
